Urk is a very old, small but important fishing town. In fact, it used to be an island when the IJsselmeer was still a sea known as Zuiderzee.

This main photo is a monument depicting a fisherman's wife waiting for the boats to return. Behind her are boards with all the names of those that were lost at sea.
