I have been to Brussels on a number of occassions. This time (Jan. 2005) for a small conference with time for sightseeing and renewing contacts with friends from various European countries.
I have mixed feelings about Brussels, which were again confirmed during this visit. The city has a definite joie de vivre, elegance, history, love of wine and food and great shopping. It is also an enormous tourist attraction and maybe that is why the Brussels people are less than friendly. On a number of occassions I experience lack of service, a smile not at the ready, and even sometimes the firm resolve to not spreak anything else but French.
Although I do speak French (and take care to do so in Brussels), it doesn't make people any friendlier.
I even felt a hint of discrimination on 2 occassions during my 2 day visit! Something which very very rarely occurs in my life and which I usually handle with a positive attitude.
I'm really sorry to come to this rather negative conclusion. I much prefer Antwerp, Gent, Brugge which are friendlier and even more attractive towns to visit.
In my tips you'll find reflected my enthusiasm and disappointment. |

JorgenDK Wed Aug 20, 2008 20:20 UTC Stay far away from the restaurant Les Vieux Bruxelles. They will never become a part of france if they keep serving such lousy meat, and they cannot remain a part of belgium wit such lousy frites. And its not cheap | Museeuw Fri Jun 22, 2007 09:16 UTC Hey, nice to see the wedding room there in your tips. My wife and I got married there 3 years ago. A nice extra to get married in a beautiful hall like that. I think it's just called 'Trouwzaal'. | Vulindlela Thu Mar 29, 2007 00:25 UTC I liked Brussels, and feel the same way you do. To me, the people were reserved. Great page! | mcepbgp Tue Jan 9, 2007 11:18 UTC The food in this restaurant is average, it is designed more to take money off tourists rather than cater for repeat customers. Hence the service is lousy and pickpockets seem to operate quite freely in its premises.. the staff know but don't seem to care? |
