  • Favorite Thing: In 1857 and 1879 there were some big fires in the old centers of Traben and Trarbach, which almost completely destroyed them. At the end of the 19th century, a flurry of rebuilding started. Especially in Traben where in 1900 a new town hall was built, a railstation building in 1904 (where the Tourist Information is now situated) and then the Post Office in 1908.
On the other side of the river in Trarbach, there was a new Gymnasium (1905, unfortunately I didn't see that), and a wellness center Kurhaus Bad Wildstein (1901-1907).

Information from "Jugendstil in Traben-Trarbach" von Ines Wagemann

Fondest Memory: The rebuilding started soon after the fires and resulted in some fine Jugendstil examples around the turn of the 19th/20th century.

    General Tips: Economic importance
  • Tip Rating:
  • Favorite Thing: Traben began to have great economic importance in the 19th century. The region was mainly agricultural and winegrowers from Trabach began to show interest in winegrowing in Traben. Even the fires of 1857 and 1897 did not stop the economic growth. The Trabachener winegrowers started a large winetrading center in Traben which gave the town a leap into wealth. Even more so than Trarbach itself. The population grew and tax income from the wine production rose as well. It is possible that the Weingesetz (Wine Act/Law) of 1892 caused this. This law said that it was allowed to add sugar to wine (resulting in higher alcohol %. The law was later reverted, it is now forbidden.). At the end of the 19th century a bridge was built between Trarbach and Traben. And thus at some point Traben-Trarbach was the 2nd largest wine trading center of Europe.

Fondest Memory: Because of its wealth, Traben-Trarbach was the first in Germany to install electric street lighting.

When I was in the USAF, I used to live in an apartment in the Huesgen warehouse next door. In one of the rooms of my apartment , I could open a "window" that was actually into the warehouse area where the wines were kept before being shipped out.
