Van der Valk, hotel chain: Hotels along motorway (all provinces)
|
Tip Rating: |
 |

|
|
|
|
about € 65 - € 80, standard double room.
Unique Qualities: You'll find Van der Valk hotels/restaurants along motorways all around The Netherlands. It stands for a typical Dutch characteristic: cheap and lots of it. So the rooms are good, the food is average, sometimes good but far from gourmet. As said: you get lots of it. Always busily frequented by business people and large families. Oddly, you'll find not a falcon (=Valk) high above each Van der Valk hotel, but a pelican. This Dutch chain, run by the family Van der Valk can also be found on the Netherlans Antilles, France, Germany, Belgium and Spain.

Stichting Vrije Recreatie: Campgrounds at farms and private properties

- This is more an accomodation tip for frequent visitors of The Netherlands or the Dutch themselves. SVR (Association for Free Recreation) is an organisation where farmers and private property owners (estates, parks etc.) offer their grounds for camping. They might also have cottages or B&B available. The people that camp there must pay € 10 per family per year as a donation and be able to show proof of their donorship at every camp location. This formula is also in other countries: US, Belgium, Denmark, Germany, UK, France, Hungary, Ireland, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Norway, Austria, Poland, Portugal, Romania, Slovenia, Slovakia, Spain, Czech Republick, Sweden, Switserland. -
Unique Qualities: - Well, this is real fun. You take your tent or caravan and stay at a farm. I enjoyed that when I was little. Just simple facilities but you can participate in farm life and be away from the hordes of holiday makers. Here some prices as an example (in €): One night Stay 1.25 Car 0.50 Small tent 0.50 Bungalowtent/Caravan 1.25 Camper 1.75 Environmental Tax 0.75 Electricity 4 Amp. 1.25 Electricity 6 Amp. 1.75 Hot shower 0.50 -

Artcamp: Camping in art

Now this is something really special. Artcamp is a combination of three dome tents of each 2 1/2 metres high. The domes are placed on different heights above ground. The lowest dome is communal space and integrated kitchen area, the other two are sleeping places. Artcamp has room for maximum eight people and has water, electricity and heating. You only need to bring a sleeping bag and pillow cover. All linen can be rented on site. And you can use all the amenities on the campground where the Artcamp is located. Design: Dré Wapenaar (Dutch) This design is also included in the exposition "Hotels for global Nomads" of the Cooper Hewitt National Design Museum in New York until March 2003: http://ndm.si.edu/exhibitions/
Unique Qualities: For a photo impression about the building of Artcamp go to: http://home.hetnet.nl/~jan-drent h/artcamp/main.htm -- You can find Artcamps on these campgrounds: - www.bongerd.nl (Tuitjenhorn) - www hertshoorn.nl (Garderen) - www.wildhoeve.nl (Emst) - www.beerzebuiten.nl (Beerze)
A week costs €205 to €480, depending on the season (prices 2002). A midweek or weekend costs €140 - € 205, depending on season. The prices are for 5 people per Artcamp. Added prices for more people (up to 8): €45 p.p. per week €25 p.p. per weekend/midweek

Superb, family run hotel. Various rooms and arrangements but average would be about 70 USD/79.50 EURO per night.
Unique Qualities: Very, VERY good cuisine. We've been coming here for more than 10 years, about twice a year. My hideout for a de-stressing weekend. Bicycles can be borrowed from the hotel to explore the countryside. The young owner has been awarded Hotelier of the Year just last week (Nov. 18 2001)! His plan for the future is not to expand to more rooms but to improve quality and service even more.

An old convent converted to hotel. I stayed here several times for work. Good rooms, most of them with balcony overlooking the inner courtyard where you can sit on a summer's day. There's also a pub and restaurant.
Unique Qualities: Prices range from 68-92 € excluding breakfast (€ 8). The hotel is in the historical city center which has a lively nightlife and shopping area. I always enjoyed staying here. Deventer is interesting to visit. It hosts the largest bookmarket in Europe and is also nice to visit during Christmas time.

Former palace of the Frisian Nassau stadhouders. Prices (2002) Appartments 1 to 2 persons € 95,- 3 to 4 persons and use of couch € 12,50 pp 3 to 4 persons and use of extra bed € 25,00 pp Konings - Suites Sophia van Wurtemberg Suite € 90,- Ernst Casimir Suite € 115,- Willem Frederik Suite € 115,- Anna van Oranje Suite € 115,- Emma van Waldeck Suite € 115,- Johan Willem Friso Suite € 115,- Maria Louise Suite € 115,- Henriette Amalia Suite € 115,- Imperial - Suites Albertina Agnes Suite € 225,- Anna Paulowna Suite € 225,- Anna van Hannover Suite € 225,- Willem Lodewijk Suite € 275,- Business - Suites Chopin Suite € 90,- Wagner Suite € 90,- Mozart Suite € 90,- Verdi Suite € 90,- Bach Suite € 90,- Satie Suite € 90,- I find the prices very competitive for such a luxurious hotel. Probably because it is in north Netherlands and a bit off beaten track.
Unique Qualities: A historical atmosphere, lovely wild quiet garden and good restaurant where you dine in style. The rooms on the first floor all have historical names, while there are also modern apartments on the attic floor. Large rooms with antiques remember the royal days when the Nassaus lived here. One of them is often used for weddings. Very appropriate!

I've been seaching for the address of this wonderful place that I stayed at some 6 years ago. It was a very old warehouse, the insides stripped and made into hotel apartments. On the left side of the photo are little cottages, also apartments. And finally the garden in between. There was no restaurant and breakfast was brought to the room. -
Unique Qualities: If anyone reads this: what's the name and address and does it still function as hotel? A full list of hotels and pension can be found at the link mentioned below. -

This is what I call modern grandeur with perfect service. Very attractive modernly designed hotel in one of the old houses in the center of Groningen. The hotel also has a restaurant ('t Gerecht, see my Groningen page).
Unique Qualities: Prices 2002: € 110 - € 195 EURO. The suite in the picture = € 195 (double occupancy). Yes, I truly found the service extraordinary. Great help with the luggage and wheelchair that my friend needed. We asked for the champagne in the room which was no problem. And we asked for early morning coffee in the room too, which was brought at no extra charge. There are several special offers which, if you want to stay here, should make use of. Good value. Splash out on the junior suite, it's definitely worth it! Valet parking for about € 15 per day which you can't do without if you arrive by car and don't want to spend an hour finding parking space.
