Johannesburg.

by ATLC - last update: Jan 11, 2003

I stayed with friends in Johannesburg for a short week. I would've like to have seen more but on the other hand, just staying with friends was a perfect way of getting to know how real South Africans live, how they live, where they do shopping, go to schools etc.
I still need to think how to put that into this VT page!
I pinched the photo from the internet somewhere.
Johannesburg looks like a modern city but the sad truth is that the buildings are empty, businesses moved to better parts of town, the crime rate is horrible. My host was shot a few years ago and when he drove us through Johannesburg, you could tell he was sad that the place where he grew up had deteriorated so much.
Johannesburg looked like a dinosaur or a big dead whale. Impressive but the grandeur and liveliness is lost.

The Waterfront still has some water with fish and ducks. About 80% was filled with sand and grassed off. They have also made a skate-boarding ramp.

Very interesting, yes, the UK Indian samoosas dont seem as tasty as the SA Indian samoosas :) Ja, they filled Randburg Waterfront in. For hygiene and maintenance reasons. Its now called Bright Water Commons! :) Jen x
