Sur le pont, d'Avignon, on y danse, on y danse. Sur le pont, d'Avignon, on y danse tout en rond...
There was a music festival going on there which made the town bubble...classical, pop, professional and amateur and jazz and jam sessions in bars and on the street until deep in the night. The papal palace, Palais de Papes, dominates the city and is definitely worth a visit (even twice). We didn't plan to, but stayed 3 full days to enjoy streetlife during day AND night. In the middle of town there is a big square with lots and lots of pub terraces on each side. You can sit there for hours people watching.
Our hotel was ancient and situated on the corner of some old streets. It took us a while to find it (not having booked beforehand) and we were glad to have found a room and get off our heavy backpacks. BUT the room was several narrow flights of stairs up in the attic.
It was a belated teen holiday with Eurorail. Two girls on holiday but much more money to spend. We were after all, 27 then and both working. It took us from Paris to Marseilles, Orange, Avignon and finally Lyon.
Anyway, we got together with 2 guys in Avignon, a policeman and his friend. My friend was a policewoman, so that was interesting enough. At about midnight we decided to climb onto the Pont d'Avignon. My friend and the two guys were on top very quickly. I got stuck somewhere halfway and suddenly thought "what if I fall"? And then decided I was simply too old to do such childish things so I climbed back down. Which proved to be as difficult as when I'd gone through with it. Felt really silly. But then, my dearest anti-hobby is S P O R T ! |
