It was a great pleasure to see the famous statue by Rodin in it's proper place, in front of the town hall of Calais. I'd only seen it in exposition.

It seems that "bourgeois de Calais" is usually translated into "citizens of C". However, in French, bourgeois has an added meaning of wealthy citizens or what would be now middle-class. In the Middle Ages, that was citizens +/- in charge of the city. |
