Allons enfants de la patrie

by ATLC - last update: Jun 22, 2003

Well, if there was anywhere where someone could tell me the text of the Marseillaise, I reckoned it would be here. I asked in Tabacs, at newspaper stalls, NO GO!
Nobody knew or cared to know.
So I sulked over my bouillabaisse which was the other reason that I wanted to visit Marseille. Visit the fish market and stay in a surprisingly good hotel in the red light district. At least, that's what it turned out to be once evening fell, and my girlfriend and I arrived back to find the whole neighbourhood bathed in neon lights and awash with lonely men and beckoning womanfolk.
What can you expect in a harbour town. Highly amusing. Must not forget: my girlfriend made me shave my legs for the first time in my life in that cubicle of a hotelroom. Whatever for escapes me to this day. I could've done a lifetime with virginally unshaven legs but I bowed for her loving insistence that a woman should remove hair (what hair??) from her shins.

Actually, you do need your friends to freshen up your memory. It is 10 years ago after all.
During our holiday there were European Championships Football. Now I'm normally not very interested in football at all, but we both wore the same orange cap on every day that The Netherlands played.
So while we went out to dinner, the hotel porter promised to watch the match for us. It was Netherlands against Germany. An important match. France was already out of the game, so he didn't really care either way. In fact, when we came back he was pleased to tell us that Netherlands had won!

During dinner I had my little revenge about the hair removal. I convinced my friend to eat fish. We were in Marseilles after all, an important fishing port.
And I enjoyed my bouillabaisse with rouille, a garlic clove and grated cheese.

"Aux armes, nos citoyens!" I did read the lyrics when I was living in the south, but I forget where.
