A few nights stay in a little village just outside Saumur enabled us to discover the town Saumur on foot and visit various chateaux in the area.
Saumur was one two place in the Loire region that we stayed at (the other was Chenonceaux), to be able to discover the area and it's famous castles.
We visted Abbaye Fontrevaud, Chenonceaux, Amboise, Chambord and lots in between :-)
In my tips you'll find a link between Saumur and William Penn, later the founder of Pennsylvania. Curious? Go look :-)
And a fine restaurant too, if you care to look in the Restaurant tip.

Very hellpful. We are on our way in September. We plan two weeks on the Loire. Must tell my Penna. born husband about the Wm. Penn connection. I'll be back to read more about your trip.
Thank you for sharing your very helpful tips. Cheers from Down Under
an interesting page about a place I have never heared of, but that castle looks very interesting ! Thanks for sharing !
Thank you for the birthday wishes and for visiting my Antigua page, Anke-Thea. I enjoyed your new Saumur page a lot. I have no travel plans, but I hope to sneak a week somewhere this year (I have had Mississippi fantasies...)
This looks like a very scenic French town, A-T, and I bet the views are breathtaking from that hilltop castle! I must confess that I'd never heard of Saumur, but I enjoyed reading your detailed tips!
town of beaut bldgs here!reminded me the running joke we had about the Loire valley?Loire plateau!&can see the plateau even in your shots!Interesting tip with Mr Duncan- learnt about William Penns&saw his statue looking over Philadelphia when I was there.
Excellent page! The national School of equitation is named The "CadreNoir" (www.cadrenoir.fr). Their shows are fantastic and given mostly for foreign official visitors. I have seen it only on TV! Amazing stories with W. Penn and Boumois castle!
Thank you for your visit to my Saumur page. We enjoyed our visit there, though it was very short and more about the surrounding sites than the town itself. I do feel it is everybit as wonderful if not better than other Loire areas
