"Mactaquac, Dam it all...." Mactaquac Provincial Park by ShanMonster

Lots of wildlife

I worked at Mactaquac Park for several years. I worked the main gate, the campers' gate, and the recreational centre. I was one of the instigators of the summer Hallowe'en haunted house, which is very popular with the kiddies.

The park is picturesque, low in blackflies/mosquitos, and high in skunks and other critters. If you're tenting, make absolute sure you zip up your tent. More than one camper has met up with a black "kitty" with a white stripe on its back in their tents.

The beach is probably better for fishing than swimming. The headpond has a rocky bottom, and, like most freshwater lakes, has leeches and lamprey eels. Ick.

You have a good chance of seeing wildlife, like deer (especially on the golf course), rabbits, raccoons, beavers, squirrels, skunks, groundhogs, red foxes, and all sorts of birds. I've even seen bald eagles, on occasion. There are also moose and bears in the area, although I have never seen them at the park.

Mactaquac Park is about a half-hour out of Fredericton. It's a great place to go for boating and fishing (small-mouth bass are the fish du jour, I do believe). If you're looking for nightlife, keep away. There's none of that, here, although there is a liquor store not too far away....
