Hello-Yassas-Hola-Salut-Ciao-Hallo-Grüezi-Sveiki-Ohayo-Salam-Merhaba-Shalom-Privet-Namaste-Sawubona- Tere !!!!

Thank you for visiting my pages! My name is Yiannis (In other languages John, Jean, Juan, Johan, Joao, Giovanni, Jaanus) actually the most common name in Greece. I'm from Athens. My interests revolve around traveling. I love learning foreign languages, although apart from my mother tongue, Greek, and English which I speak fluently I only have a basic knowledge of French and Spanish.I didn't have the time to advance more. I really enjoy having friends from around the world as I'm particularly interested in learning how life is in different countries.
Although my University degree is on Accounting my real passion is geography. I'm an ardent collector of maps, atlases and travel guides. When I see or hear about a location on the news or a movie I instantly try to find it on my atlas! lol I'm also interested in history too. Studying the past is basic for understanding the present and have a vision of the future, after all. Last year, and while I was still at the army (obligatory in Greece I took the exams to enter the Geography department of a University in Athens. And I made it!Now I study there and in a few years I will be officially a geographer!

So far, most of my travels are within Greece. Yet, I still miss many parts. Greece is not big, yet it so diverse and parts of it are rather remote. From abroad I?ve been to regions that once were part of the Greek civilization. For just a few hours to each, I have been to Bari, Italy and Ephesos, Turkey. In November 2003 I could finally make a travel with a capital "T". Mentally, I was preparing for this trip for many years. And it was my first journey via airplane. For many people it is just a routine, but for me? How can I express the first moments of the taking-off? Seeing the world from above was my acquaintance with another dimension. From up there everything seems simple. It was a revelation for me. It was as if the maps I was studying suddenly became alive. And studying the maps so much I could understand almost everything: the islands, the cities and towns etc.

I will never forget those 47 days in Venezuela either. Not only I could meet members of my family for the first time but I actually lived there, I wasn't just a tourist. What impressed me most was the diversity of nature, paradise islands, beautiful women, nightlife (salsa, merengue and a lot of rum) but also the great contrasts.

Still I have a lot of work to do with my pages. So far, I have worked mostly on my page of Athens, the city which last year hosted the XXVIII Olympic Games, characterized as "an unforgettable dream". Recently I got a digital camera and soon I'm going to add many new photos and tips. Check out my new updated pages of Athens and Rafina.

This photo is from my most recent trip that included Corinthia, Patra (Northern Peloponnese) and Olympia and was an educational excursion with my new University. It depicts the ancient port Ireon and to tell you the truth, before this trip, I knew nothing about it. A good example that besides the internationally known sites Greece has many off the beaten path attractions and offers you the opportunity to feel you make a new discovery. We actully went there because of the geological interest of the area. This site is pretty amazing.f*

Well, enough with the chatter.I should let you take a look at my pages. Tell me what you think and feel free to ask me anything, especially concerning Greece. Oh, and have good travels!
