THE CITY OF IOANNINA is located in the mainland of Epiros: 450 kilometers north from Athens and 60 kilometers south from the Albanian border. It is the capital of the Prefecture of Ioannina which covers 54% of the total Epiros area (~5000 km2). The total population of the Prefecture of Ioannina is roughly estimated about 200.000 inhabitants out of which about 130.000 live in the city. 85% of Epiros is mountainous (the highest point Mt. Smolikas 2637 m). The winters are cold and rainy, the summer warm and the spring and the autumn are cool.
The city is built amphitheatrically on the shores of the Lake PAMVOTIS in the shadow of Mt. Mitsikeli (1812 m) that rises majestically up on the opposite side of the Lake Pamvotis.
In the middle of the Lake Pamvotis there is a small picturesque island called Nisaki, the Small Island (Nisi=island, -aki=small). This island's surface area is about 350 000 m2.There are scheduled boats to and from Nisaki every hour from the lakeside beside the Castle |
