Amsterdam has so carefully crafted a bad reputation for itself that people may doubt if it's at all safe to go there. Don't worry, the city is not nearly as dangerous as it claims to be in a pathetic attempt to be in the same league as New York. Just be on your guard always and everywhere. you can be on your guard in a relaxed way, there's no reason to get paranoid. Beware of pickpockets, especially in crowded areas, and people who approach you in the streets. When arriving at the central station don't stay to admire the building but bring your luggage to a safe place first. You can always come back here to taker a closer look. Also, look out for traffic. Finally, yes it's perfectly safe to bring your children, although they're likely to be bored because there's so little for them to do. Stay out of souvenir-shops and the red light zone if you don't want to expose them to nudity and obscenity. There's a lot of that around. And hold their hands near busy traffic.

This is NO joke. It isn't a political statement either. This is a serious warning. Despite Amsterdam's reputation as a tolerant city, in the past years there have been several incidents that made me write this. A warning to Jewish people and to people who 'look Jewish'; it is advised not to go to certain parts of Amsterdam. You really should be fine in the centre, but the old neighbourhoods outside the centre, especially to the west of it, can be dangerous. You risk verbal abuse and worse (spitting, violence) from groups of 'young locals from Northern African descendance'. Why? As they claim themselves it's 'because they disagree with Israeli politics'. Well, so do I, but it's no reason to harrass ANY individual. But then these aren't reasonable people, they're scum and usually involved in crime as well. Sorry, my tip isn't politically correct. Reality isn't always. (the tip group was added by accident and cannot be changed it seems. It's not completely inappropriate though.)

fyathyrio Wed Jul 16, 2008 20:42 UTC I wouldn't recommend visiting the Anne Frank house. Instead, take a photo of the exterior. If you haven't read her diary, do so. If you already have, re-read it. There are very few things worth seeing inside. | rickaicp Mon Jun 4, 2007 07:01 UTC Another person confusing Israel with judaism. The two are not necessarily the same or in cahoots with each other. Some peoples' agenda is to make it look like everything jewish = Israel, so that even more people will hate jews. Thanks a lot. | jo104 Mon Apr 16, 2007 12:58 UTC I really enjoyed your Amsterdam page, I spend a lot of time in the Dam & surrounding areas as I have good friends there & u're right u don't have to visit a coffee house I haven't why ruin your holiday being wasted. I'm visiting Het Schip this visit | PhillyJohn Sun Sep 3, 2006 20:36 UTC We visited Ann Frank house, walked to the Rijksmuseum, had lunch after the museum, took tram to Dam square, tried to find the Oude Kirk but found the red-light area instead and then RAN back to the train station! |
