"Breda competes with 's-Hertogenbosch for the title of Prettiest City of Noord-Brabant. I'm not sure yet which of the two is the winner. They're both attractive, but also very different. While 's-Hertogenbosch has a rather medieval and catholic character, Breda has changed in character much more, and has a few important touches of protestantism. Perhaps Breda is the more varied of the two."

So far for the old text that graced this page in the first month of its existence. I hadn't visited the city for a while and build my page on memories. In my memory Breda was one of the loveliest places in the country, until I revisited it in March 2003. It has a very nice centre, but certain parts of it are filthy and definitely lack a nice atmosphere. There's also an abundance of tasteless modern architecture. Today I must definitely say that 's-Hertogenbosch is the prettier of the two. But Breda is still well worth a visit, and its nastier parts can be avoided. And if you're prepared to look beyond those you may find that some of the city's outskirts are very worthwhile too. Whether you're interested in monumental buildings, eating and drinking or just shopping, Breda has it all. Only you have to be forgiving about the mess a bit.
