Deventer is one of many cities in the Netherlands that claim to be very old. Many of these cities are indeed very old, but Deventer ranks among the oldest and was the first one to be chartered, the so-called city-rights. Which isn't necessarily a guarantee for the presence of nice old buildings, but Deventer sure has a lot of them. The city obviously has had a golden age in which it was of far greater importance than it probably is now. Once a member of the Hanseatic League Deventer was one of the four powerful cities that ruled the area now known as Overijssel. In the 15th century Deventer was an important centre of the Devotio Moderna, a catholic movement which eventually lead to Humanism. Today it's a provincial town, but a pleasant one. Once a year the whole centre is turned into a giant open-air bookmarket. I only forget each time to actually go.

Deventer's architectural heritage was my main reason to come here. And which, I should add, is the reason that I only have tips of the Must See-variety to offer. Don't worry, once in this place you can sort out the rest easily by yourself.
