If you only visit one city in the Netherlands.... ...make it this one.
Maastricht is one of the oldest cities in this country. In fact, both Nijmegen and Maastricht claim to be the oldest, both being founded by the Romans and having been permanently populated ever since. Nijmegen however is the one which was chartered first. But who cares, Nijmegen is OK but Maastricht is great and without a doubt should be on the list of priorities for anyone who likes culture and architecture. In fact, this is my favourite city in The Netherlands. It's so much different from any other place in the country. I love just to stroll around its old center, see the sun shine on its ancient marl churches, enjoy a beer in one of the many pubs. One day is never enough. I'm sure there are many faces to this city, but I've only seen its positive sides. I was amazed to hear that to some people it looks dangerous, and I just cannot imagine how that's possible. Although by no means a quiet little place, Maastricht's centre looks quite peaceful. People have asked me how Maastricht compares to Amsterdam. I can only answer; forget about Amsterdam. If you only visit one city in the Netherlands, let it be Maastricht! |
