"Oudenbosch, the Vatican of the north" Oudenbosch by OlafS

Oudenbosch Travel Guide: 12 reviews and 35 photos

The Vatican of the north! Not one, but TWO copies of the St. Peter in Rome. A seminary, monasteries, convents. If there's one place that evidences catholic megalomania of the 19th century, this is it. And it is all due to one man, Father Hellemons, local priest and friend of the pope. He had the medieval parish church replaced by this basilica, the dome of which indicates the location of Oudenbosch from quite a distance, and made the small town one of the most important places in the diocese of Breda. Today's Oudenbosch is not a picturesque place, but it has a few impressive sights.
