This page is not about the town of Achel. It's about a nearby monastery. An abbey even. Why would anyone visit an abbey? Well, abbeys can be very nice places. This one happens to be quite a touristic one, as a matter of fact. Many cyclists make a stop here during a tour. Other people come by car , motorcycle or even by foot. On a Sunday in Summer you're unlikely to be alone here. Hundreds of people will have had the same idea as you.

It's also the only monastery that I know of that is located in two countries, part of it being in The Netherlands but most of it being in Belgium. That's not the reason why so many people come here. Nope, the monastery has a few shops and a bar. One of the shops sells religious stuf, the other one is a small supermarket selling products made in other monasteries and convents as well as the normal everyday necessities such as beer. More important; the monastery has its own brewery.

You just reminded me that there's a Trappist monastery outside of Jerusalem that I have to visit one of these days. They produce wine.

by the time I go there they will start making ice cream with wine taste as well ( it doesnt metter red or white ) :)

Extraordinary page! I would like to try that beer and icecream :-) it's nice there are places where you can retreat for a while.
