There's something wrong with this town. It looks nice, but the old buildings don't look old at all. Unless you consider some 80 years 'old'. In the First World War Diksmuide was almost wiped off the face of the earth. Here, on the banks of the river Ijzer, the Allied armies stopped the German offensive for four years. Thousands of young men died on both sides, often not knowing what this war was all about. When the war was over almost nothing was left of the old town. It was rebuilt after the war, a copy of the old town. The churches, the town hall, the beguinage, all reconstructed, stone by stone. The war has been over for a long time, but its memories will never again leave Diksmuide.
