Living very close to Belgium no month has passed in the last two years that I didn't cross the border. Usually this is for filling up the car, buying beer or do some shopping. Never to see a city though. Finally, that has changed when the opportunity came up to visit Leuven with my wife and one of her friends, who had some important business to do. If I wanted to come along they asked. I must admit that Leuven was not the first place I wanted to visit. I knew very little about the place, except that long ago it was the capital of the Duchy of Brabant, that it has a very old university and that it now is the home of the Evil Empire of Beer that is known as Interbrew. My image was that of a mostly industrial city with little to see. I was so wrong and am glad that I did agree to go along. That day I was on my own as my wife helped her friend to finish that business. It was a long day. I made some very long walks. After 5 hours of almost continuous walking, with only a short lunchbreak in between, I definitely had enough. But did I enjoy myself? I certainly did!
I made 190 pictures that day. Although bad weather was expected the sun came through occassionally. I had planned to see a few churches, but each time I'd seen one I'd notice another one in the distance, which took me further away from the centre. When I write this, the day after, my feet still hurt. They're not used to that many cobblestones!
Update June 2003: I've been back in Leuven, and it seems that I will be back more often in the near future.
Update December 2003: I live in Belgium now but didn't feel like rewriting the first sentences of this page.
- Pros:Lots of nice buildings, a great brewery and picturesque atmosphere
- Cons:My feet hurt!
- In a nutshell:Nice destination for a grand day out

Interesting page! I thought the two signs were Dutch/French versions? Anyway, thanks for the walk down Leuven Memory Lane!!

Leuven is a great city. I can't wait to go back there for a closer look. Great tips and pages.
Leuven surprised me with how lovely and how friendly it was. I'll go back again some day.
Interbrew gave you a really hard time, he? Put another tip in "Warnings or Danger" to let us know which other beer brands we have to avoid! Anyway Leuven seams to be great!
Leuven looks pretty cool! Why are so many things closed on Mondays in Belgium? Your travelogue photos are Beautiful!!
