Boca del Drago

Boca del Drago can be visited as a day trip from Bocas del Toro (better known as Bocas).

From Bocas, you can catch a bus at the town square (next to post office), which has a schedule posted on a wooden board, near the park benches that face the main street. Travel time is around 1 hour approximately; the bus will drive around the main street once, picking up passengers, then once you depart Bocas, it will pick up other passengers along the way.

Once you arrive in Boca del Drago, the bus will drop you off in front of a restaurant, an educative/scientific center w/ lodging for its students, and... not much else. When we arrived, our instinct was to walk towards the water, right? Right! So, we walked. And there was.. no beach? Hmmm... There was a house, with a grassy field in front, and a "no-trespassing" sign. Hmmm. Did a bit of walking around, and ... nothing. Ok, this is an island, there's got to be a beach somewhere in here. I asked the people in the house, hoping they wouldn't yell at me for stepping on their grass, where the beach was.

Ah, relief, there was a beach indeed~ Directions, below. =)

Crossing the creek

So, the people at the house were sitting outside around a table, chatting or having breakfast, or maybe both. And here I was, stepping on their grass, trespassing and interrupting them. So, how do I get to the beach from here?

Ah, turns out that, facing the water (with the left over pier), you must walk to the left. Follow the path, cross the creek (pictured here), and watch out for falling coconuts. =D

That was their directions, paraphrased for accuracy in finding the beach.

The creek is a tiny creek, when we crossed it, the water was ankle deep, and very much calm. Just like the locals. ;)

Falling coconuts

The path you have to follow to get to the beach becomes faint at times, so you must look way ahead, in order not to end up in the midst of trees and shrubs.

As for the falling coconuts, you will pass a corridor with 2 rows of coconut trees. If you look at the ground you will see -- take a wild guess -- fallen coconuts! Lots of them. So, in all seriousness, take the advice and really watch out for falling coconuts. =)
