Sydney is the capital city of the state of New South Wales. The population of Sydney is about four million. The city is build around the huge harbour, and covers 1120 square kilometres. Canberra, just outside Sydney, it the capital of Australia.
Sydney has been inahbited for at least 50 000 years by the indigenous population. In 1770 Captain James Cook landed in Botany Bay and claimed the land for the king of England, calling it New South Wales. A colony was established a few years later, and the First Fleet, led by Arthur Phillip, landed in January 1788. On the 26th of January 1788 Authur Phillip claimed NSW in an official ceremony. Sydney began as a penal colony, with thye first free settlers arriving in 1793.
Sydney is now the most populous city in Australia and has a huge variey of shopping, restaurants, historical sites and tourist attractions. The Sydney Opera House and the Harbour Bridge are the city's best known landmarks. The city was also made famous this year with the Olympics.
Some of my family lives in Sydney so I have been there a few times over the years. Hopefully I'll gradually get some info on this page for those of you interested in seeing Sydney for yourselves.
