| Hat Tham Phra Nang, Krabi |
Once a haven for Asian pirates, Krabi is located on Thailand's southern peninsualr. The area boasts spectacular scenery, cheap accommodation, loads of activities and a great atmosphere. Krabi offers a less commercial base than Phuket, from which to explore the Andaman sea and surrounding Islands.
Krabi's stunning limestone cliffs have made it a mecca for climbers from all over the world. The underwater scenery is also impressive, and diving and snorkelling activities abound. You can also kayak around the limestone formations which jut out of the ocean, hike along some of the tracks, through forests, cliffs and caves, learn about the local culture, take a thai cooking class or just chill out on one of the beaches. Alternatively, you can do a Thai language course, attend a meditation retreat, shop til you drop or sample a relaxing Thai massage.
Krabi has endless possibilities, and is a worthwhile addition to a trip to Thailand. |
| | Krabi's beaches Krabi town is located about 20 minutes drive from Ao Nang, and is accessable by boat from East Rai Ley. The main commercial centre in coastal Krabi is Ao Nang (pronounced Ow Nung), which houses numerous guest houses, resorts, restaurants, banks and shopping areas. Ton Sai is a quiet cove, which you can access via a long tail boat from Ao Nang. It offers a cheaper alternative to Ray Lay West, with numerous bungalow operations and cheap places to eat. Rai Lay West has three resorts, at the more pricey end of the spectrum. East Ray Lay has some cheaper alternatives, though the beach is not as nice for swimming(largely mangroves). Phra Nang beach is possibly the nicest in the area, with an exclusive resort the only accommodation option. Long Tail boats leave regualrly from each of the beaches, with trip prices set and displayed on a sign at Ao Nang. There are loads of touts rounding up people for their boats, particularly in Ao Nang, where they wait all along the main road. |
