Alcazaba: The Alcazaba
  • Tip Rating:
  • The Moorish fortified palace of the Alcazaba, built during the occupation of the Moors. The Caliphs constructed this huge fortress-cum-palace on the top of a 70 meter high hill. It comprises of some 35,000 square meters, divided into three fortified sections. You could spend a great deal of time here exploring the ruins, towers, baths, dungeons. The third enclosure at the very top of the hill, housed the palace of the caliphs, it was once thought to rival the Alhambra at Granada in its granduer.

Taken over by the Christians, it was expanded to its present size. The original mosque consecrated to the Archangel St. Michael by the catholic monarchs.

    It is closed on Mondays.

    Alcazaba: The Alcazaba Gardens
  • Tip Rating:
  • Within the Alcazaba complex you will see the reconstructed Arabic Gardens, located in the lower section of the Alcazaba after you enter through its gates. Water features have been restored and planted with an array of Meditteranean plants.

Alcazaba: Views of city and port
  • Tip Rating:
  • Good views are seen of the city and port of Almeria from the Alcazaba. From above the city is an untidy jumble of rooftops, but when walking the streets, its character changes.

    Cathedral: Almeria Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • In 1522 a huge earthquake destroyed the mosque at Almeria, two years later construction was started of its present cathedral on the site of the ruined mosque.

The cathedral was built with fortified towers at each corner, cannons were placed in each towers, for use during the frequent attacks by Barbary Pirates. The city population would retreat into the cathedral at these times of trouble and the cathedral became a defensive structure for the city. In fact it has more of an appearance of a castle than a cathedral.

Also of interest at the cathedral are its two elegantly decorated renaissance portals, the wood carvings in the choir stalls and some works of art in its side chapels by artists such as Murillo, Ribera and Alonso Cano.

    Alcazaba: City Wall
  • Tip Rating:
  • Part of the Alcazba fortifications, substantial parts or the city wall remain. Originally it would have surrounded the city and run down to the port. a very impressive size and distance.
