| Cordoba is a city with so much colour. |
| | I first visited Cordoba in 1970, I was only 9 years old at the time. What I do remember about this city was... firstly, the Mezquita, secondly the Oranges ( I had never seen them growing on trees in the street before) and finally the enormous giant goldfish in the pools of the Alcaza.
Well I finally managed to visit again, in May 2004, 34 years after my first visit. I was more impressed by the Mezquita than I was the first time, the grand Mosque turned Cathedral must surely rank as one of the wonders of the world. The orange trees are still there, growing in the streets as they do all over the towns and cities of Andalucia. Yes... and the Alcaza still has its giant goldfish, although they dont seem as big now as they did to a nine year old boy, but still of an impressive size. |
| Patio´s decorated with their plants, dont miss. |
| | Cordoba is certainly a city worth visiting, Carmen and I went during the weekend of the Festival of the Patios, a colourful event where householders with the traditional Spanish patios decorate them with flowers, its part competition, part celebration. Rejas and windows are also decorated, as you walk through the streets taking in the spectacle you can also visit many of the normally private patios.
Cordoba possesses many other things that should not be missed, firstly the Mezquita as I mention above, the Alcaza de los Reyes Catalicos, the Juderia (old Jewish district), its main square the Plaza Corredera, as well as a wealth of churches and buildings of Architectural interest, many quite unique.
Nearby, 8 Kilometers(5 miles) is the ancient city of Medina Azahara, for which I have built its own page. This city was at one time the capital of Muslim Spain after it was moved from Cordoba itself. At one time its splendour must have exceeded that of the Alhambra at Granada, but all that presently remains are ruins and some carfully reconstructed sections, but well worth visiting. |
