"The Prettiest Village in Spain" Frigiliana by Beach_dog

Certainly one of the prettiest and best preserved of the ´White Villages´

Frigiliana sits nestled on the mountain slopes of the Almijara Sierra just behind the coastal town of Nerja. It seems that special care has been taken to preserve its ancient Moorish style Architecture and I am sure it looks much the same today as it did 600 years ago.

Frigiliana´s Old Streets.

The character of the town is distinctly ´Moorish´. Narrow streets sided by small houses, with small windows and ancient doors. It seems that nothing new has been added, and if it has it is blended into the environment so well as not to notice.

Remains have been found in a nearby cave ( Cueva de los Murciélagos ) which date right back to the Neolithic period. Later the Pheonicians arrived and remains of their Necropolis have been found nearby.

The Romans came next, buildindg a fort at the top of the hill, and it seems Frigiliana´s name has Latin origins, "frexiniusana" which means - villa of Frexinio.

It was an important area during the period of the Moors, and after its conquest by the Christians in 1487, the local Moorish population lived peacefully with their new neighbours until the revolt in the mid 16th century. The following battle ´´The Peñon de Frigiliana´´ the moors were finally expelled and replaced by Christians from surrounding areas. The story of this time of trouble, can be seen on the tiled plaques that are located around the town.

Today the locals live alongside new invaders, retired people from further north in Europe, who have bought many of the houses, to enjoy the areas mild climate.
