  • The Gibralfaro was built in the 14th. Century to protect the Alcazaba (the Palace of the Moorish rulers of the area). After the Christian conquest it continued in its military role right up until 1925. Much of it stands intact today and it perches on its hilltop location overlooking the city. It's worth visiting for the spectacular views it affords of Malaga, but also offers a good museum housed within its buildings.
    Opening times:
    Summer 09:00 to 20:00
    Winter 09:00 to 18:00
    Cost is about 4 Euros.

  • This fortress dates back to the 700s, although much of the structure belongs to the mid 11th century. The entrance is through the gateway known as the Puerta del Cristo (Christ's Door), where the first mass was celebrated following the Christian victory over the town.
A small palace within the inner perimeter is now the home of the Archaeological Museum.

  • During some renovations to Malaga library a few years ago (1951), they discovered the remains of a Roman Theatre on the site. The Library was pulled down completely and rebuilt elsewhere and excavations carried out on the theatre. Today it can be visited along with the Alcazaba, located on the hill behind it.

  • This impressive building is worth seeing, even if you are not happy with its use. It was my only memory from a visit to Malaga in 1970, until I revisited this year. Here it is pictured from the Catillo de Gibralfaro.

    Cathedral: Malaga Cathedral
  • Tip Rating:
  • Malaga´s cathedral was built between 1528 and 1782 on or near the site of a former mosque. While original plans had allowed for two towers, lack of funds resulted in the completion of only one, giving rise to the name by which the cathedral is affectionately referred to, La Manquita, loosely interpreted as 'one armed woman'.

Sounds like August would be the best time to visit Málaga, during the Feria. My only visit there was in January, on a bicycle trip, and it rained quite a bit. I see you have signed up for EuroMeet 2008 in Karlsruhe, so I look forward to meeting you there.
