Before leaving Cyprus, to which we were posted for two years we decided to take the opportunity to visit Eygpt, specifically the Pyramids, and Cairo Museum.
We travelled from Limmassol, via Cruise ship to Port Alexandria. There we disembarked onto coaches and travelled to Cairo, first the Pyramids and then the Museum.
It was a great experience, although very hot, it was a dry heat and more bearable than humid heat, at least it was for us. I even had a camel ride out into the desert, but not before ensuring my guide realised he would only be paid by my wife on my return, a safe guard we were told to employ. The Museum and the artifacts, especially of the more recent finds was amazing, however, you had to pay to take pictures on entry, and no video camera's were allowed.
But despite all the fantastic sights we saw the ones that also stick were those we saw travelling to Cairo. The poverty was obvious all around, the sight of people travelling on the roofs of trains, a dangerous, but necessary mode of travel for most, made us grateful for our blessings. A truly enlightening experience not likely to be repeated, although I would like to try the trip down river sometime. |
