Liberec itself is rather lucky as it enjoys a privilleged situation located as it is between the very beautiful Jizera and Luzice mountains. This means that it is only a stone's throw to the most impressive countryside ideal for skiing in winter and hiking and biking during the rest of the year. The area is particularly popular with cyclists for its hilly and rugged terrain. There is a well-maintained network of marked trails and routes for both hikers and bikers.
One of the main symbols of the town is the 1012 m high Mount Jested crowned with the famous mountain hotel that was declared to be the building of the century. From the peak there is a breathtaking view over the whole of the Liberec region with the silhouette of the Giant Mountains in the background. You can reach the peak on foot or by car, cable car or chair lift. The mountain also offers ideal conditions for hang-gliding.
Of special interest in the town itself is the neo-Renaissance town hall. There are other impressive neo-Renaissance and art nouveau buildings in the form of the North Bohemian Museum and the District Gallery, which has its permanent and temporary exhibitons.
Liberec is just made for romantic walks. I would suggest one setting out along Masaryk Avenue. This passes through a quarter with villas built at the turn of the 19th and 20th century, by the Botanical Gardens, only 150 m away, past the Swan Lake, the zoo and on to the People's Gardens. From here, you can take the route marked by the blue signs to the nearby forest with swimming pool or follow the green or red signs leading to various locations in the Jizera mountains.
Flora and fauna
While there is plenty of flora and fauna to see in the surrounding countryside, there is really nothing like a visit to the Liberec Zoological Gardens, which participates in international protection programmes. The zoo itself breeds over twenty species of the most endangered species. Especially popular with the kids are the white Indian tigers there. Of course, they may look very sweet indeed, but would certainly like to eat you for breakfast.
Liberec Botanical Gardens can boast the most modern glasshouses in Bohemia wehre they have around 7500 species of tropical and sub-tropical plants. Outside there are a futher 1500 plant species. The gardens have unique collections of orchids and carnivorous plants, and an exhibition of Australian plants.
There is awhole range of fitness centres and sports grounds where you can play tennis, squash, golf, etc. Or maybe you prefer bowling, horse riding, hang-gliding or other active pastimes. There is a large swimming pool, which is also a leisure and sports centre. Apart from other attractions, it has a 100m water chute and boating canal. During the summer people flock to the Liberec Reservoir for swimming and sunbathing. There is also a number of other municipal baths and swimming pools.
No matter what the weather, you will always enjoy a visit to the Babylon Centre - a social, shopping and entertainment centre under one roof for the whole family. The centre even has its own fairground with all the traditional attractions as well as electronic games. There is a shopping village with quaint shops, a gallery, gaming enterprises, bowling, stylish coffee bars and restaurants, an internet cafe and aqua park with water chutes, slides and other attractions.
