Melnik

by Amazonka - last update: Jan 28, 2004

The district town Melnik lies in the middle of the Labe lowlands at the confluence of the rivers Labe and Vltava. The Region belongs to the most important agricultural areas of the Czech Republic. The main agricultural plants are fruits, vegetables, potatoes, corn, sugar beet and wine.

In the 5th and 6th century many Slavonic tribes lived here and the tribe of Psovans created in Melnik its settlement. Princess Ludmila, who maried the Bohemian prince Borivoj, belonged to this tribe. Denar coins of the princess Emma are the first allusion to Melnik's existence. In November 1274 Melnik gained a town status from the king Premysl Otakar II. and later on Melnik was a royal-town, which belonged to Bohemian queens.

Wine-growing

Princess Ludmila began with wine-growing in Melnik and later the Roman emperor and Czech king Charles IV. continued in this activity. He brought here the wine from Burgundland. Now the wine-growing has a long tradition in Melnik and every autumn a wine-celebration takes place here.

Floods in August 2002

This is one of the villages that were flooded in August 2002. Most of the village was ruined and about half of the houses had to be moved to a safer location. It is about 3 km from Melnik and it is called Kly, Kelske Vinice.

It was very hard for me to see my friends loosing all they had. We were lucky because our weekend house is on a hill. The green stuff you can see is vineyard. I go there every weekend and have plenty of friends there.
