Uherske Hradiste is in the southeast of the Czech Republic, in the middle of the beautiful winegrowing region of Slovacko. Like most inhabited regions in this country, this one also has a long history, but unlike many others Uherske Hradiste has managed to maintain its very colorful folk traditions. On feast days the locals turn out in their traditional costumes, which are often handed down from generation to generation, and the whole region coes alive with folk songs and dancing.
The town of Uherske Hradiste was founded by Bohemian King Premysl Otakar II on October 15, 1257 as a fortress to guard the border of the Bohemian kingdom and the nearby monastery at Velehrad. However, settlement of the area goes back right to the Stone Age. Today's Uherske Hradiste combines its long history with all the assests of a thriving modern town. The Festival of Wine and Open Monuments is usually held in the first half of September. |
