Local Customs: Festival of the Hungry Ghosts...
  • Tip Rating:
  • Festival of the Hungry Ghosts - 9th Aug 2002 - 6th Sept 2002
It's an annual event followed according to the lunar calender.
As the 'Gates of Hell' are thrown open during the 7th lunar month, Taoists fear that the homeless spirits are out to create havoc on earth. To appease them, generous helpings of incense, candles, food and 'hell money' (mock currency notes) are offered on the first and final day of the festival. Throughout the month, public banquets and 'wayangs' (Chinese street operas) are organised to entertain these wandering souls. These performances are usually held at night within HDB estates. Attend one if you can. Oh and beware, do not step on those offerings or the ashes of the burnt 'hell money' or anything else that is offered to the spirits. The superstitious believe that you'll offend the spirits and bad luck will befall you (some may even follow you home!). I've never tried, but it's always better to be safe than sorry. :)
