1)The planetarium was opened in Mannheim in the year 1927, making it one of the first in the world. The new Theatre of Stars, located directly at the edge of the city where the motorway exit comes to an end, opened in 1984 and is already from outside quite impressive. Independently produced multi-vision shows are projected onto the 20 metre domed ceiling which covers an area of 624 square metres. Performances last about one hour and offer an entertaining and not too technical insight into the world of space. In addition to the standard astrology programmes, lectures, concerts, laser shows and performances especially for children are held here.

The Mannheim Planetarium is run as a non-profit private limited company, a business form that has worked successfully with other planetaria as well.
