If you prefer native culture and language try San Spirito on the other side of the Arno. Great bars and pubs and a nice, open area. If you are a sports fan and feeling a little homesick there are plenty of bars to choose from. Try the Fiddler's Elbow on Santa Maria Novella. There you can always catch a good Irish soccer game along with some American football.
