The bay at Lemvig forms a natural harbour giving lee from many directions. Up until 1851 ships anchored up some distance from the shore and the cargo was brought by barge to and from the ships. In 1851 the first jetty was built and the harbour trade began to expand. At one point the merchants of Lemvig had a fleet of 10-12 ships engaged in overseas trade. In the years around the first world war the fishery harbour had one of the largest turnovers in Denmark. Today there are only a few fishing boats based in Lemvig, all fishing in the North Sea. In addition to these, there are some smaller fishing boats which fish the Limfjord.
Motor- and sailboats use the harbour in Lemvig and the marina at Vinkelhage. On Mathilde?s quay there is a new building housing facilities for sailors and a restaurant.
In the summer months one can take a trip on the fjord and out to sea on the old sailing boat "Mira".
