Kamakura

by KevinMichael - last update: Aug 25, 2007

The Kyoto of Eastern Japan

Kamakura city
Kamakura became Japan's political center when it was chosen as the new seat of power by the Kamakura shoganate, shogun Minamoto Yoritomo, in 1192. It remained so until its decline in the 14th century.

My wife and I both loved Kamakura. In fact, I think we wouldn't mind living here.
Kamakura boasts a beautiful coastline with parasailors darting here and about the Bay. Also, throughout this ancient Japanese capital are a number of well preserved Shinto shrines and Buddhist temples (and some with a mix of both).
Street scene. Look a rikasha!

A beautiful traditional Japanese city

It's a tourist town

Without a doubt, for all there is to see in Kamakura, this place is a tourist magnet. However, on the nice side it doesn't feel like it's being overwhelmed by tourist (that's the kind of problem you'd find at Disneyland). Kamakura feels fresh and not overly tainted with cars and little industrialization as far as I could tell. The streets are narrow and the traffic is slow moving. There's so much more to see that we've got to go again.

If you're going to Kamakura, start your trip early. This way you'll have more time to see all the temples and enjoy everything else about it. Better yet, stay a night or two to really get the feel for this Japanese treasure.

Kamakura is good for walking

Although we took a bus to get here. Much of Kamakura feels small enough that you could get around it by walking or riding a bicycle. Next time, we'll try more of the latter.

If you like temples and shrines then this is a good place to get a gander.

Enjoy.
