My best friend's family lives in Poway, up in the mountains. The drive there is so incredibly beautiful that every time I do it, I can't help but remember how great parts of California are. They live in their own little world of flowers and giant, flat boulders and a self-contained fabulous house. We practically never leave once we get there. Poway is in the middle of nowhere, way northeast of San Diego. I always joke that it would be a great place to dispose of a body, if need be. I'm willing to bet there are some pretty ripe ones out there somewhere. It's also extremely close to where the Heaven's Gate cult committed mass suicide a few years ago. When in Poway, watch out for people with androgynous haircuts wearing the same tennis shoes. The people out there are cowboys. They have horses and big lots of land. Lake Poway is nearby, but it seems to be drying up. They've got all the amenities, like video rentals and places to eat, and shop. But civilization is about 30-40 minutes away. Poway would be great for Stephen King or a mystery writer to come and write novels. One night, Ilana and I were driving and we saw a man in a hospital gown (and nothing else) standing outside Blockbuster Video. We didn't stick around to see where he went. Welcome to Poway. |
