"Artsy Fartsy" Laguna Beach by bluefelt

Yes, that's right - Laguna Beach is the most artistic center in this South Orange County (I like to call it the Orange Curtain) area. That's pretty scary! While I love Laguna for its tolerance and support of people of all color, religion, sexual preference and poor driving habits, I have to say that the art is extraordinarily kitsch. This is where the artist, Wyland, who paints murals of dolphins and whales on the sides of buildings, has made his mark. By mark, what I really mean to say is he has covered the city with his disgusting form of cheesy 70's van art to appeal to hippes, rich yuppies from Irvine who want to collect, and upper middle class people who just don't know any better. (See above picture.) Please don't assume I hate dolphins themselves. I love the sea and all it contains, but there's a certain limit to the types of art that I'll put up with. I think Wyland has at least 3 galleries in Laguna Beach alone. Thomas Kinkade, the "Painter of Light" also has his very own gallery there. I really don't think I have to explain that one. My intestines shiver just thinking about it.

Among the rubbish, you will find honest, well-practiced artists. Laguna holds the Art-a-Fair every winter and summer and also the famous Sawdust Festival, which has everything from carved wooden bowls to gold and silver jewelry to blown glass vases...and the obligatory 70's ceramicware that's been there since my birth...maybe even the very same pieces.

Some great stores at the beach are Areo, the Sherwood Gallery, the Fingerhut Gallery, and many more.

You've got me curious about the bathroom at the Royal Hawaiian... how is it haunted? I have been in it alone and didn't notice anything odd (although that was after a few of those big blue drinks)...
