There is not much to justify. The Prague Castle is maybe the most shining jewel in Prague. It dominates the town from above with austere, silent beauty. The most "must see activity" to do here in Prague, nevertheless climate or what people say. Don't miss it. Reach it using the perfectly efficient underground landing at Prazsky Hrad station and the prepare for a long climb. BTW "hrad" stands for "castle".

The beautiful landscape is your reward for having climbed the monumental stairway that bring you at the castle entrance. I was lucky, I have to admit it. A short but heavy snowfall took place the evening before, and it was so cold that week in Prague that snow turned into ice and stayed for the whole week. This is there result on the houses' roofs. Lovely, in my opinion

This is the inevitable tribute to my very special guide here in Prague. I had two, actually, the second one shown shortly later. You see my wife well covered in this pic. This is not a point, because she always feels cold, anywhere in the world except from Dubai, but that morning (it was december 24th) the temperature fell down to -10?C and it was windy, also. Absolutely my coldest walk around.

The panorama that visitors can enjoy from the Castle is stunning. I was there in the morning, and maybe afternoon and sunset time would have been better. The town placidly lies below you. Not much traffic, smog and crowd there. There were many freezed visitors at the Castle site, but the situation was still "livable". Maybe on summertime things are far different. I'll tell after my already planned second visit.

And there's my second guide, the white one. She's actually my mother-in-law, who has been so kind to give me shelter and feed me for the whole time. The only problem was that she tends to speak a curious language that's not possible to learn for humans. An example? imagine a simple word, let's say THURSDAY, do you know the czech translation? CTRVTEK, crazy enough? no, you should hear the correct pronunciation...

Sorry for having put one more picture about roofs. I did it for two reasons. 1) it gives an idea on how the old prague architecture is 2) it was so beautiful, that I wanted to share it to you The Prague architecture, aparts from the big monumental buildings, mixes small houses like the ones you see here and large aparments buildings almost everywhere in town. Older houses have the typical steep roofs of the cold countries. Colours are bright and various, but I'll tell more later

This picture shows, on the left side, a wall. Behind it there is the steep way up to the castle entrance you'll be forced to walk to enter. It is not a tragedy, anyway, just take your time. Some vendors will try to sell you along the way every kind of nonsenses. Try to avoid unless: - you love something tooo much OR - you are far richer than how you want to let your friends know OR - you love to waste your money prices are not high, if compared with towns like London, Rome or Paris, but you can cut the price down to the half elsewhere in town

Close to the entrance, on the right, there is a passageway leading to this curious part of the castle. This is called Golden Lane, or in czech "Zlata ulicka". It is quite narrow, and many tourists slow down here to enter the many shops open here. Well, these shops, unlike the ones in the previous tip, are expensive EVEN if compared with Rome, London or Paris prices, so my advices are still valid

This picture took a long time to come to life, because so many people were passing in front of me. My desire was to show you how small these houses are. These small houses were built in the gothic fortification, the 16th century homes of castle riflemen and craftsmen. The landmark here is a pub were I suggest you order a gluhwein (hot red wine) at about 40 Kc

The St.Vitus Cathedral as seen from behind. Depending from the entrance you choose to reach the castle inner squares, you reach the The St.Vitus Cathedral from behind or from the front. Regardless the direction, anyway, this building is stunning. This is the first landmark I've seen here in Prague, and maybe the most famous. It is visible from anywhere in town because it is the tallest building established on the highest place in Prague
