Maybe there is no longer way to get from Los Angeles to San Francisco. Faster are: - flight (wow! Original!) - Interstate 5 - Highway 101 we preferred to take the Highway 1, the well known Pacific Coast Highway, from north of Santa Barbara diving into the California coast wilderness. Highway 1 runs along the coast, offering incredible shore sceneries especially in the northern part, before reaching the Monterey Bay. This area is called the BIG SUR

The Sunset maniac strikes back. This is a wonderful sunset over the Pacific Ocean. There are so many "vista points" along the road. Taking sunset pictures against the sun is my passion, as you may imagine. Forgive me, nobody is perfect, or don't rate this tip!

No, the same one got in another perspective. The Big Sur is not only rocky coastlines with a road climbing up and down north headed, anyway. There also a lot of wonderful forests to pass through. Plan a lot of time to travel trhough it, the road is long and not straight. But so wondeful also.

Seems Ireland, but it is not. Rocky coastline, sometimes real cliffs, are visible directly from the road, and the sceneries are breathtaking for many people. It is hard to find a vista point WITHOUT cars parked and a lot of people taking pictures. Take your time to travel through this area.

BIG SUR: This place deserved a long stop

This place deserved a long stop, definitely. I cannot point you exactly where this vista point is, let's say about 20 miles south of Carmel, in a woody area. There is a wide right turn, the road climbing. The vista point is there, and it is great! It may appear as a pointless one, because some trees seem to block the sight but that's not true, stop there and you will be rewarded.

The Pacific Ocean shore was at 50 meters below from my view point. There is a small promontory, with no protection, so I took a lot of risk JUST TO OFFER YOU THIS PICTURE! APPRECIATE IT! Just kidding, I'm scared of the heights like nothing else in the world. This picture took me 1 year of life away.

BIG SUR: Maybe my best picture here

Maybe my best picture here, taken from the same promontory. Finally I succeeded in taking a photograph in full sun without letting the dark parts appear even darker. I'm just an amateur photographer, and that should be clear from here. People watching these pictures have said "I don't know if the places were really wonderful or your camera is really great" never thinking about the photographer's skills! How well they know me...

this may be even better. Your's the verdict. Wildlife in the Big Sur is abundant. Especially birds and aquatic creatures. Pelicans and seagulls are here in large numbers, flying up and down even close to the visitors and that creates a nice atmosphere. Groups of sealions are also present, but far more difficult to photograph because of distance. Take your time to stay there

BIG SUR: The BIG SUR: additional considerations

Some final considerations about the fabled BIG SUR. The Lonely Planet guide says that this beautiful area is known for being the shelter of many people that love camping and lodging here. Through the trees, many times, so many tents are visible. Suddenly I understood that this ara is densely inhabited, but beware, it is not for weak wallets. The appearance of the lodges, restaurants and other facilities clearly suggests it.

YOSEMITE NAT'L PARK. Big, big park with forest one never thinks to find in California but most likely in northern italy. Yosemite is: - wonderful - well maintained - so scenic and most of all: - HUGE! crossing the park by car will easily takes you 2 hours, from west to east. No counting the falls (see the related tip), the most beautiful part of yosemite is the Tioga Pass, the only eastern entrance, that reaches 3000 metres in height
