All roads lead to Rome.... Rome was founded on 753 b.C. There are many legends on how it happened. A famous greek poet told the story that were escapers from the Trojan war who founded Rome, others said that a warrior called Romulus killed his brother and founded Rome ruling here as the first king.
History tells instead that Rome has been a Kingdom during the first years, seven were the Kings of Rome. "The eight king of Rome" is a title normally given by football supporters to the current superstar. After these seven kings, Rome became a republic, and later, during the reign of Julius Caesar, an Empire.
The Roman Empire extended from Morocco to Azerbaijan, from Assuan to Edinburgh.
During later centuries, barbarians and christianity, together with a devastating internal corruption, destroyed the great Empire.
Rome culture spread through Europe, anyway, and survived Rome itself. I'm proud to be able to say that Rome brought civilization to all Europe, and consequently has been the seed of the modern world.
The Roman civilization has been strongly influenced by the Greek one in many ways, and greeks now love to say that romans conquered Greece but greeks conquered Rome. It is not completely wrong.
Don't ask me more about history, I'm a poor engineer...
So, I'm from Rome. I live here, I was born here. My relationship with my hometown is somehow controversial. I love Rome, how can I hate it?
I believe Rome is the most beautiful town I have ever seen, and I saw a lot of them in my journeys. But somehow, incredibly, like all Romans I think, I get used to his beauties and I almost don't see them anymore.
I live close to S.Peter's Cathedral, in the center of Rome, and this is the description of the path I follow to go to work: St.Peter's Cathedral, Castel S. Angelo, Tiberina Isle, Vesta Temple, Bocca della verità (mouth of truth, I think), Caracalla.
I'm not telling this to be envied, but just to state that Rome is so full of beauties and monuments that if someone lives here, it is very hard not to keep in touch with history and culture.
The counterpart is that Rome is still a mess, and it will remain in this state for long time. Traffic and organization are not at the level they should be in a capital city, and in THIS capital city especially. I long to move to a smaller town to get a better quality of life, even abroad. And I'm sure that, once away, I will miss this great mess.
This page, like all the hometown pages, will be always under construction as I will add tips and travelogues to fully describe what Rome really has to offer, and from a point of view of a roman. There will be room for monuments but also for everyday life, just give me the time to collect a decent amount of pictures
Also forgive me, for all of you that are not interested in football, for the space I will give to my favourite football team: AS ROMA! |
