  • Ponte di Rialto.

While travelling the Venice canals (see Transportation section) the first great monument you can find is this big bridge. It is not just the usual tiny bridge, but there a large road passing through and it's also full of shop selling all those kinds of useless souvenirs the tourists love so much

  • The Grand Canal (Canal Grande): the main communication way throughout the town, it brings to the main square (Piazza San Marco). During the trip you'll see so many marvellous buildings, palaces, churches...

Instead of the normal parkings you can see gondolas and motorboats docked by the buindings' entrance.

  • San Marco Cathedral. Maybe among the most famous landmarks in Venice.

I want to offer you here an unusual sight of the cathedral as seen from above the belfry, that is very close to the cathedral itself.

Don't forget to climb the belfry. It is the highest spot in Venice and offers a fatastic landscape on sunny days.

  • Another sight of the cathedral and of the town roofs taken from the bell tower.

This is called "Campanile di San Marco", "campana" is the italian translation of "bell".

This what I wanted to say in the last tip. The unique sightseeing.
In my Paris page I was talking about how different the architecture is from Italy. This is the proof.

  • From the belltower you can see almost everything from the above, here's a shot of the bay.

This is taken almost at noon. There is not the best light to enjoy, but that's it, our schedule imposed that visit at the wrong hour.

    Again! Don't miss it!

  • There is another church (trying to remember the name aaarghh!) that stands alone on an island.

The belfry clock is particular because it's bell is rang hourly by two big statues painted in black. Those are called "Mori di Venezia", Venice Moors, and they hit the bell with a large hammer.

Quite particular thing to see, just like the statues of the clock in the main square in Munich.

  • The Canals: this picture shows how different and vivid are the colours you see in Venice.

The canals are the Venice Roads, for this reason you can feel life flowing through them, not just boats with tourist.

Just a few pople still live here, maybe 100.000 people or less, but Venice is still a living town, not just an open air museum....

  • MURANO and BURANO: There two main islands close to Venice, called in this curious way.
There you can go to the glass artworks factories to look artisans producing nice (and useless) objects out of white-hot coloured glass. Prices are high, anyway, but still accessible.
Glass artworks are the most unique souvenirs for the Venice area, so if you like the don't go away without having bought one, they are hard to find abroad.
