River and Canal Boats: The Chao Phraya river...

Getting TO/AROUND: The Chao Phraya river represents the main road of Bangkok.
Hundreds of boats swarm up and down the river day and night.
Some of them (quite big) are used as buses.

Bus stops are docks. People stands there waitingfor the 'bus'. The bus arrived, DOESN'T STOP but only slows down, and a small boy jumps down to the dock, secures the boat with a rope, and shouts to jump onboard...

You pay for the trip onboard to 'officers' (I've found a baby not older that 10 years).

There are two types of taxis. The River taxi are boat similar to Venice gondolas, managed by private drivers, that run on the river and the other canals at incredible speed, compared with the size of the boats themselves.

Bangkok is full of canals, sometimes it's called the Asia Venice, but it's very different. Bangkok is a big, messy, living town. Millions of people live there. Venice is a sort of monument, just a few people live in the ancient town.

This is a photo of Chao Phraya at the sunset, show Modern hotel and small boats. Let me say, this is the contradiction of alla the places I've visited in southeast asia, hi-tech modernities and ancient traditions.

Getting TO/AROUND: TUK TUK: these are the 'land taxis'.

Tuk tuk are small motor bikes with some sort of sofas in the back. You sit there, at the open air (and air pollution is at an incredible level) and the driver brings you everywhere.

There are thousands of them, they run fast in the messy traffic, and if the drivers see a pale face walking, they stop offering you a city tour at a cheap price. The only problems that you're probably going to be stopped every 2 minutes by these guys.

Very interesting tip on the Chao Phraya River! I just read a book that takes place in Bangkok and now I want to see this place for myself - you were lucky to come here on business!

Those tuk tuk drivers sound as tricky and conniving as Delhi's auto-rickshaw drivers! The sunlight in that transport pic is amazing! Is that real or photoshop??
