I remember where there was nothing between Bodrum and Bardakci cove. The only way to get there was if you had a boat. A famous Turkish singer -Zeki Muren- would always go there to enjoy the clear waters and isolate himself from the crowd. I can't believe they built so many hotels etc. to join Bodrum & Bardakci and even Gumbet all together.. I really miss the way Bodrum looked and felt back in mid 80s..

You have no idea how much memories I have in this place. Gumbet is the place where I spent all of my summer days between '85 & '89. Where I learned to windsurf and then worked as an instructor for 3 summers in a row. Even though my family had a nice house 2 miles away, I chose to stay in my tent 50 yards away from the sea and the surf boards..:)) The number of hotels/motels went form a handful to hundreds in 15 years. It got ridiciluosly crowded and ugly compared to what I remember of Gumbet. It used to be the camping and swimming spot cuz it's so very close to Bodrum. There were these jeeps (acting as a dolmus) that were leaving from the bus terminal in Bodrum every 5 -10 min to take you to Gumbet. It's about 10 min ride for a small fee, and they will stop anywhere you asked them to. Btw, Gumbet is the name given to these little white-domed cisterns.

I spent my hours/days waiting for the wind to pick up.. We would pray for strong winds the night before so that no beginners dare to take classes, and we get to enjoy the wind..:))

the island in the background is Kos island. It belongs to Greece. It's only 3 sea miles from Akyarlar village in Turgutreis, Turkey. Many times we would envy Europeans going there from Fener location with their windsurfs and coming back at night, making sure they have their passports with them. Being so young back than, and the possibble difficulties between the two governments I never dared to go there via Wind Surf back in those years. Hopefully one day.. :))
