The Ore Mountains (German Erzgebirge / Czech Krušné Hory) are a mountain range in Germany and the Czech Republic. It extends over 150 km (95 miles) from the Vogtland (western border of Saxony) to the Elbe River. The highest peaks are the Klinovec (1244 m) on the Czech side and the Fichtelberg (1214 m) on the German side. In the north you find the industrial region of Saxony, between the cities of Zwickau and Chemnitz. The Ore Mountains have a remarkable form. They are gently sloping away to the north but incline extremely steep to the south.
The Ore Mountains were almost unsettled until the mid 15th century. As soon as silver and tin deposits were discovered here a enormous settlement started and hundred of cities were founded. The name is derived from the richness in mineral resources. Today the mountains are also a popular winter sports resort as well as a famous hiking resort in summer. |
