Rhineland Palatine is situated in Germany's southwest. In the north is the Eifel Hills, an ideal region for hiking and the only region in Germany with active vulcanoes. Between Eifel und Hunsrueck Hills is the Mosel Valley with the vineyards and the beautiful castles. Trier, birthplace of Karl Marx, is the oldest German town close to the Luxembourg border, was a Roman imperial capital in the third and fourth centuries AD, and is UNESCO World Heritage site. Where the Mosel meets the Rhine is Koblenz. From Ehrenbreitstein Fortress you have a breathtaking view over Rhine River. South of Koblenz is Ruedesheim, the gate to the Taunus. Between both towns is the Rhine's symbol, Lorelei Rock, which has provided the inspiration for many songs about its legendary siren. The capital of Rhineland Palatine is Mainz, an important university town. It is situated on the confluence on Rhine and Main and is well know for its 1000-year old cathedral and the annual Mainzer Fassenacht (carnival).
