| map by virtualtourist.com | Hamburg has about 1.7 million inhabitants and has the largest port of Germany, although the city is over 100 km upstream to the next Sea - the North Sea. Up to eighty million tons of cargo are loaded on and off every year. The city is situated where the Alster and Elbe rivers meet. In World War Two Hamburg was almost completely destroyed by Allied air raids. Today steel and glass structures dominate the city. Hamburg is called "The Green City" as nearly 50% of its area is marked with water, forests and farmland; therefore it is Europe's greenest city. The Neon-Light destrict of Reeperbahn gave Hamburg in the second half of the 20th century the name "Sin-City".
I'd like to recommend this excellent website about the attractions of Hamburg. |
