St. Bernward

Saint Bernward lived in the early 11th century as bishop of Hildesheim. He made the city an important center of Romanesque art by founding several buildings; the cathedral is among them.

Old city centre

At the wall of the Freiherr-von-Stein-School you can see an old map of the city centre before World War Two.

Small Church

Church of St. Godehardi

This Late Romanesque basilica was erected in the years 1133-80 by bishop Bernhard I. It honors the Holy Bishop Godehard.

Green lung of the city

Hildesheim has numerous parks and green places off the main roads. Don't know where exactly this photo was taken. I think near the St. Michael's Church.

Pick-a-back Statue

This bronze statue bases of a local legend. A thief carries a sack full of stolen apples. A gnome sits on his shoulders to symbolize the thief's guilty conscience.

Cathedral of Hildesheim

The 11th century Cathedral of Hildesheim is also on the list of the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage. It was completely destroyed during World War II and rebuilt from 1950 to 1960. Some itmes like the bronze doors of 1015 or the Christ’s pillar of 1020 "survived" the bombings. Main attraction is the 1000-year-old rosebush.

City Fortification

In 1167 Hildesheim was completely surrounded by a city wall. To the east and north were towers and city gates.

St. Lamberti Church

The St. Lamberti Church in Late-Gothic style was rebuilt in 1952 after it had been destroyed in World War Two. The altar inside originate from 1420.

St. Michael's Church

This Romanesque St. Michael's Church was built in the 11th century. Since 1985 it has been World Cultural Heritage on the UNESCO list. Inside the ceiling is from the 13th century and in the crypt is the tomb of Bishop Bernward.
