Königsplatz

From Königsplatz depart a lot of public transportations and every now and then markets are hold here.

Shopping Mile

Kassel suffered a lot from the Allied bombing between 1943 and 1945. About 95% of the city was destroyed. In the 1950s the city was rebuilt in a very modern style and only a few buildings were reconstructed to its old glamour. However, today Kassel is a great place for shopping. One shopping mall to another one, huge department stores and nice shops invite for spending money.

Friedrichsplatz

At the Friedrichsplatz is the State Theatre, the Documenta Hall and the Friedricianum. The staute shows landgrave Friedrich II. Below this square is one of Kassels largest underground parking garage.

Documenta 9 Hall

This hall was built for the Documenta in 1992 and is still used for several exhibitions.

Lutherkirche

In this church rests the last prince elector of Hesse-Kassel Friedrich Wilhelm I who died in 1875. The church itself had been completely destroyed during the Second World War and was rebuilt in the 1970s. It's spire is at a height of 80 m (262 ft). In front of the church is one of the oldet cemeteries of Kassel.

Martinskirche

St. Martin's Church was built in 14th century but it had initially one tower only. In 1892 a second tower was constructed and the older one was transformed to Neo-Gothic style. Inside the curch are numerous graves of landgraves.

Karlskirche

This Huguenot church was erected in 18th century. While the expulsion of the Huguenots landgrave Karl gave them shelter in Kassel. Most of them were great architects and handicraftsman. In the end of the 18th century one fifth of Kassel's citizens were Huguenots and they brought the city a new architectural stlye.

Landesmuseum

The State Museum houses exhibitions of archeology, craftsmanship and the world's unique wallpaper museum.

Fridericianum

The Fridericianum is located betwen the State Theatre and the Documenta 9 Hall. It was once a school and is used today as museum.

City Hall

The city hall was constructed by the architect Karl Roth between 1906 and 1909. During World War II had burnt out but was rebuilt after the war. To the right side of the city hall is the tourist information.
