I praise my Leipzig...!

Leipzig by "Leipzig"
map by virtualtourist.com
"I praise my Leipzig...!" is Johann Wolfgang Goethe’s famous quote about the ancient and vibrant Saxon city he described as his Little Paris. Goethe studied at Leipzig University (found in 1409), second oldest in Germany, as did Lessing and Jean-Paul Sartre . Martin Luther, Johann Sebastian Bach and Friedrich Schiller stayed here and Lenin printed the first issues of his Marxist newspaper in the city. It is Wagner's birthplace, Mendelssohn was director of music, and Bach was choirmaster at the St Thomas' Church. World's oldest trade fair is located in Leipzig and world's first daily newspaper was printed here.

Today, Leipzig has a population of about 500,000 and is Germany's second largest banking metropolis, a rapidly developing media centre and has Europe's most modern communication network and a flourishing cultural scene. A lot of companies have decided on Leipzig as a business location like the car makers Porsche and BMW, Siemens AG Information and Communication Products, Verbundnetz Gas AG, PC-Ware AG, DHL, Central German Broadcasting Corporation (MDR), Max Planck Society with three institutes and many many more.

Leipzig is situated in the northwest of Saxony, between Berlin and Munich. Leipzig has good living conditions and a lot of greens, parks and forests in and around the city (Germany's third greenest city). There is so much to see and do in Leipzig, you just cannot be bored here. People are open minded and friendly here (I know it because I have lived here my entire life).

Leipzig is where the Peaceful Revolution in 1989 began. More info.

VT Meeting in Leipzig

Impressions of the biggest VT Meeting in LE

In May 2003 I had a three-days-meeting with Vivian (jinwenwang), Ulrike (nepalgoods) plus partner, Mischka (sympathisant) & Ben (purzelbaum)

The meeting started on Friday, May 23rd at 10pm. Vivian and I met at the Sleepy-Lion Hostel in order to find the Vivian's hotel. She booked a room at the Marriott-Renaissance. It took us almost two hours to find the right one. There's a Marriott hotel in town but it was not the right one. The one she booked a room in was just called Renaissance although they wrote Marriott on the voucher. Very confusing! Ee finally found the right one - Yippee!!
After the unexpectedly long walk we went to a pub with open-air seats to empty some glasses of beer and to eat "Apfelstrudel" (apple strudel).

On Saturday at 3pm Vivian and I met Ben and Mischka at Moritzbastei, a famous student pub. Together, we went to the Central Station to pick up Ulrike and Stephan. It was a very hot day and we all were extremely thirsty. At first we went back to the Moritzbastei. It took a while before the waitress took our order. The sun was shining very intensely and we felt like a snowman in summer. Finally we got our drinks. During our stay there we wrote postcards for several VT members. After signing the cards we went through the city centre in order to take some photos for our VT pages. :-) In the evening Ben and Mischka leaved to meet some friends and Ulrike, Vivian Stephan and I went to a nice restaurant. We had a very delicious meal. We talked until 9pm. Then we went to a big musical celebration called the Honkeytonk Festival. We found a table outside a pub in the student quarter.

On Sunday Vivian had to leave early in the morning to catch her train back. I picked up Ulrike and Stephan from her hotel and we did a short sightseeing tour by car. After that we took breakfast at the Central Station. It is a huge complex with loads of bakeries and other stores. At noon we went to the
Völkerschlachtdenkmal (Monument of the Battle of the Nations). It was too hot to climb up the 91m to the highest vantage point, so we stopped at the middle platform at 61m. After a wonderful view over the town we went back to the centre to visit the St. Nicholai and St. Thomas Church and a lunch at a Russian restaurant.
